What is a coffee bite? Everything you need to know

A coffee bite is a 20g solid edible coffee product that delivers the full flavour of a roasted coffee without any brewing equipment. Here's exactly what that means.

7 July 2026·The Joe

A coffee bite is a 20g solid edible product made from three ingredients: cocoa butter, coffee, and sugar. You eat it directly. No machine. No brewing. No waiting. The full flavour profile of a roasted coffee — origin notes, roast characteristics, the texture on the palate — delivered in a single bite.

How is a coffee bite different from coffee-flavoured chocolate?

The distinction matters and it comes down to what does the flavour work. In coffee-flavoured chocolate, the flavour is often added via coffee extract, powder, or artificial flavouring layered onto a chocolate base. The coffee note is an additive.

In a coffee bite, the coffee is the product. We use cocoa butter as a carrier — a food-grade fat that acts as a neutral vehicle for the coffee's natural oils and compounds — and the roasted bean supplies all the flavour. If you use an Ethiopian natural process with pronounced stone fruit and floral notes, those notes come through in the bite. If you use a dark-roasted Brazilian with a chocolatey, low-acid profile, that's what you taste. The coffee is doing the work.

What does a coffee bite taste like?

It tastes like coffee. More specifically, it tastes like the coffee it was made from. The melt profile is similar to a fine dark chocolate — it gives on contact and dissolves across the palate. As it dissolves, you get the aroma, acidity, body, and finish of the coffee, compressed into a few seconds of experience.

If that sounds abstract: the closest comparison is a well-pulled ristretto. Concentrated, clean, with the roast character front and centre. The Espresso Bite sits squarely in that territory. The Cafe Latte Bite is rounder and creamier. The Macchiato sits between them. The Sports Bite is high-caffeine, no milk, built for function over finesse.

What are the ingredients?

  • Espresso Bite: Cocoa Butter, Coffee, Sugar
  • Cafe Latte Bite: Cocoa Butter, Coffee, Sugar, Milk Powder
  • Macchiato Bite: Cocoa Butter, Coffee, Sugar, Milk Powder
  • Sports Bite: Cocoa Butter, Coffee, Sugar (no milk, high-caffeine formulation)

That's it. No artificial flavours. No preservatives. No fillers. The simplicity is deliberate — fewer ingredients means the coffee has nowhere to hide, and nothing to hide behind.

How do you use a coffee bite?

You eat it. Unwrap, eat. Some people let it melt slowly on the tongue to experience the full flavour development. Others bite through it for a quicker hit. There is no wrong method.

The practical use cases are the ones that originally motivated The Joe: a coffee before a morning run when there's no café open yet. A caffeine hit on a long drive without stopping. An espresso on a flight without waiting for the trolley. A post-lunch pick-up at a desk without leaving the building. Anywhere the infrastructure for a real coffee doesn't exist or doesn't fit.

How much caffeine is in a coffee bite?

Caffeine content varies by variant and by the specific beans used. For The Joe's core range, a single Espresso Bite contains approximately 60–80mg of caffeine — comparable to a single espresso shot. The Sports Bite is formulated for a higher caffeine delivery; exact content depends on the production batch and is confirmed on the label.
